Crypto returns follow the same power law as venture

Thirty of the biggest crypto deals, by multiple on the earliest investor’s price. With equal money in each, Ethereum alone is 42% of the value returned today and the top five are 91%. Most of the peaks were never realized: ten of these deals are now under 10×.

Public token sales: boom, bust, revival — and bust again

Money raised through ICOs, exchange sales and launchpads. The 2025 revival (Pump.fun raised $600M in 12 minutes) faded fast: Q2 2026 was the weakest quarter in years, while private rounds carried on.

Median return today by distribution channel. Only launches with no VCs or presale are clearly up; buyers at listing of VC-backed tokens kept a median 7 cents on the dollar.

$78M
Hyperliquid’s revenue per employee in 2025 (Artemis) — no VC round, 31% of supply airdropped, nearly all revenue spent buying back its own token. Ani called it “the most efficient business ever made at scale,” then helped with a paper showing its liquidation engine cost users millions in the Oct 10, 2025 crash. Discussion — If the best token launch skipped VCs entirely, what is a crypto VC actually selling?

What the public receives directly. The median token gives ~38% to team and investors and ~45% to a foundation the insiders run — the “community” slice in the deck. Only ~10% goes out as a sale or airdrop; the rest, the public buys from everyone above. Median of 24 tokens · the exceptions: Hyperliquid (31% airdropped, no VCs), Jupiter (40%), Pump.fun (33% public sale)
